What You've Been Carrying

There are things you've known for a long time. Rehearsed in the car. Written in the journal. Felt pressing against the chest like a held breath that never quite finds its way out.

Maybe it's a boundary you've needed to name. Maybe it's grief that never got words. Maybe it's a need so simple it should have been easy to say, but somewhere along the way, you learned that saying it out loud wasn't safe.

The throat chakra, Vishuddha, sits at the crossing point between what the heart knows and what the mind can shape into language. It is the bridge. Ancient Greek and Roman sailors carried aquamarine believing it came from mermaid treasure chests, blessed by Neptune himself. They called it "The Sailor's Stone" and trusted it to calm storms and keep them safe on open water. Pliny the Elder was among the first to record its existence, and aquamarine carries a documented history stretching back over 4,000 years.

The name itself is poetry: from the Latin aqua (water) and marina (of the sea). It belongs to the Beryl mineral family, the same family as emerald. Its blue comes from trace iron content, and high-quality deposits are found in Brazil, Madagascar, Afghanistan, Russia, and beyond.

What draws me to aquamarine, what makes me reach for it again and again in my studio, is the way its mythology maps onto something deeply present. You don't have to be crossing an ocean to need that kind of courage. A difficult conversation is its own open water. A long-held truth, finally spoken aloud, is its own storm to navigate.

Aquamarine's energetic quality is one of steadying. It builds courage. It clears fear. It supports the voice when the stakes feel high, when the words matter too much to get wrong. It is the stone for the conversation you've been putting off.

Ancient healers also used aquamarine to treat throat ailments, sore throats, and respiratory troubles. Long before anyone mapped the chakra system onto crystal work, there was already an intuitive link between this stone and the physical throat.

Blue Lace Agate: The Rarest Voice, the Gentlest Truth

Blue Lace Agate comes from a single mine in Namibia, the Ysterputs mine, which no longer operates. Every piece of genuine Blue Lace Agate that exists is all that will ever exist. I hold that knowledge every time I set one into copper. It changes the way I handle it.
