What Amethyst Actually Is

Amethyst is silicon dioxide, the same mineral as clear quartz, rose quartz, and citrine. The purple color comes from iron impurities within the crystal lattice that have been altered by natural irradiation over geological time. The same process that produces amethyst, when applied to greater heat, produces citrine, which is why some citrine on the market is heat-treated amethyst. Natural amethyst and natural citrine are chemically identical except for the specific form the iron takes within the structure.

The finest amethyst comes from Zambia and Uruguay, where the color is deepest and most saturated. Brazilian amethyst tends toward lighter lavender. Madagascan amethyst is often a medium violet. All are genuine amethyst. The color variation is geological, not a quality indicator, and different people are drawn to different points in the spectrum.

Amethyst Through History

The name comes from the ancient Greek amethystos, meaning not drunk. Greek and Roman drinkers wore amethyst amulets and drank from amethyst cups in the belief that the stone prevented intoxication. Whether or not that worked, it speaks to the stone's long association with clarity of mind and self-possession. In medieval Europe, amethyst was a stone of royalty and clergy, appearing in crowns, scepters, and bishop's rings. Catherine the Great of Russia was famously devoted to it. The British Crown Jewels include significant amethyst pieces. It was considered a precious stone on par with ruby and emerald until large deposits were discovered in Brazil in the nineteenth century, which made it widely available and shifted its classification to semiprecious.

For Aquarius and Pisces

Aquarius runs from January 20 to February 18. It is a fixed air sign ruled by Uranus and Saturn, associated with independent thinking, innovation, and the ability to see systems and patterns clearly. Amethyst supports the Aquarian quality of mental clarity and the ability to think without being clouded by emotion or convention. Pisces runs from February 19 to March 20. It is a mutable water sign ruled by Neptune and Jupiter, associated with intuition, empathy, and the dissolution of boundaries between self and other. Amethyst supports the Piscean quality of spiritual depth and the ability to move between inner and outer worlds without losing orientation.

Care

Amethyst is quartz and relatively durable at 7 on the Mohs scale, suitable for rings and daily wear. The one significant vulnerability is sunlight: prolonged exposure to direct sun will fade the color over time. Store away from strong light. Remove before water, swimming, and lotions. Copper develops a natural patina over time.
