THE ART OF ELECTROFORMED ALCHEMY

What Is Electroforming?

Every Blackbird & Sage piece begins with a natural stone and a slow, hands-on process called electroforming.

A conductive layer is hand-painted onto each design. The piece is then submerged in a copper bath, where pure copper molecules grow over the form, layer by layer, for hours. The copper follows every edge, every ridge, every natural curve of the stone beneath it.

No mold. No stamp. No shortcut.

What emerges is a setting that feels like it grew there. Because in a way, it did.

No two pieces are identical. The copper builds differently every time. The stone is never the same twice. That is not a limitation. That is the whole point.

Why Copper?

Copper is one of the oldest metals humans have ever worked with. It has been shaped, worn, and traded for thousands of years across nearly every culture on earth.

Ancient Egyptians used it in amulets. Indigenous cultures across the Americas worked it into ceremonial objects. Ayurvedic tradition has long associated copper with a quiet conductivity that goes beyond the physical. We are not making claims. We are acknowledging a very long history of people who believed this metal was worth wearing close to the skin.

As a material, copper is warm. Visually warm, with its rich reddish-gold tone that shifts as it ages. Warm to the touch in a way that silver and gold simply are not.

It is also the only metal that works with electroforming the way we need it to. Copper builds in organic layers. It follows contours. It captures texture. It bonds to natural stone in a way that feels less like manufacturing and more like the metal found the stone itself.

Over time, copper develops a natural patina. It deepens. It shifts. Some people polish it back. Others let it age. Either way, the piece becomes more itself over time, not less. That is rare in jewelry. That is worth something.

Why We Work This Way

Mass-produced jewelry starts with a mold and fills it. We start with the stone and build around it.

The difference shows up in every piece: in the weight, the texture, the way the metal meets the edge of the crystal in a line no machine could plan.

This is jewelry that carries the marks of its making. Subtle variations in texture. Natural patina. Organic form. These are not flaws. They are evidence of a process done by hand, slowly, with care.

For many of the women who wear it, that care is something they can feel.

What You Are Actually Getting

Every Blackbird & Sage piece is made in small batches in our Santa Fe studio.

Stones are ethically sourced and chosen for their natural character, color variation, and form. Each setting is shaped by the stone itself. Texture, thickness, and patina will vary slightly from piece to piece, and that variation is what makes yours yours.

Natural stones have been used as personal objects and quiet companions for as long as humans have been picking them up off the ground. We choose each stone for its beauty first. But we also choose it knowing that the woman who wears it may feel something in it that goes beyond aesthetics. That is not something we can manufacture. It is something the stone already carries.

This is heirloom-quality work. Not because of the price, but because of what goes into it. Pieces made this way age beautifully. They develop character over time. They are worth keeping, and worth passing on.

Timeless Craft. Earth-Rooted Design.

Electroforming is not a fashion category. It is a craft tradition.

We use it because it is the most honest way we know to make jewelry that lets natural materials lead. The stone is not decoration. It is the foundation everything else is built around.

There is old knowledge in these materials. In the copper, in the crystal, in the slow process that brings them together. We are just the hands that do the work.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is electroforming? Electroforming is a process where pure copper is grown, layer by layer, onto a hand-assembled design submerged in a copper bath. The result is an organic, one-of-a-kind piece shaped by the natural contours of the stone.

Why does copper turn skin green? Copper can leave a harmless, temporary green tint on skin due to natural oxidation and your skin's pH. It washes off easily with soap and water. All Blackbird & Sage copper pieces are sealed to slow this process.

Will my piece look exactly like the photo? Because each piece is handcrafted around a unique natural stone, subtle variations in texture, patina, and form are expected and intentional. Your piece will be similar in design but genuinely one of a kind.

How do I care for electroformed copper jewelry? Keep it dry. Remove before showering, swimming, or applying lotions and perfumes. Wipe with a soft, dry cloth. Store in a dry pouch away from humidity. Full care instructions are included with every order.

Are the stones ethically sourced? Yes. Stones are chosen for their natural character and sourced with care for both quality and ethics.
