A teardrop of fire on a copper band. This ring features a 6x4mm Welo Ethiopian opal in a classic teardrop shape, electroformed in copper so the metal grows directly around the stone's edge, holding it without a traditional setting. The opal shifts from honey-gold to green to flashes of orange depending on the light and the angle — no two stones show the same fire. Delicate enough to stack, distinctive enough to wear alone. Wear it when you want to carry something quietly extraordinary.

Opal is associated with creativity, emotional depth, and spontaneity. The birthstone of October. Wear it when you need to feel inspired and fully yourself.

Why Welo Opal

Ethiopian Welo opals are a variety of hydrophane opal found in the Welo region of Ethiopia, prized for their vivid play-of-color ranging from warm honey and amber base tones to flashes of orange, green, and blue. The teardrop shape is cut to maximize the stone's internal fire and color movement. October's birthstone, and one of the most visually complex gemstones on earth. No mystical claims. Just a genuinely remarkable stone with a meaning that fits real life.

How This Handmade Opal Ring Is Made

Each ring is made to order in my small Santa Fe studio. I hand-select every opal for its color and fire, then electroform copper directly around the stone using a slow electrical process that takes days. The result is a completely one-of-a-kind setting with its own character. No mass production, no shortcuts.

A Note on Stone Variation

Welo opals vary in base tone and play-of-color. The ring you receive will be similar in character to those shown, chosen for its beauty and quality.

A Note on Opal Care

Welo opals are hydrophane and can absorb water, which may temporarily affect their appearance. Remove before swimming, showering, or applying lotions or perfumes. Store dry and away from prolonged direct sunlight. Handle with care.

Copper Finish Options

Bright Copper has a warm lustrous shine and will develop a natural patina over time. Polish with a soft jewelry cloth to restore brightness. Antique Copper is dipped in liver of sulfur and polished to a rich dark patina that brightens gradually with wear.

Gift Packaging

Every order arrives gift-ready with natural materials and a handwritten note card. Add your message in the order notes.

About Electroforming

Electroforming is an ancient technique reimagined for modern jewelry.
Copper molecules bond to each stone over several hours, creating organic textures and secure settings. Learn more about our process.

Each ring is electroformed in pure copper, a process that uses electricity to slowly grow metal over organic forms, stone, or wax-carved bases.
This ancient-meets-modern technique creates natural textures and one-of-a-kind variations — no two pieces will ever be the same.
All rings are nickel-free, can be sealed for daily wear, and finished by hand in our Santa Fe studio.

For centuries, copper has been worn as a grounding element — believed to balance energy, support circulation, and keep the wearer anchored in presence. It reminds us of our connection to the earth and our ability to return to stillness.

Care & Patina

Electroformed copper develops a natural patina over time — deepening into warm, earthy tones that tell the story of your wear.
To maintain brightness, polish gently with a soft cloth or a touch of lemon and salt.
To preserve the aged finish, simply wipe clean and store in a dry place.
Avoid wearing your jewelry while swimming, showering, or applying lotions, as moisture may alter the patina over time.

Copper Protection

Embrace the Patina

Some collectors love the rich, aged look that copper develops over time. This natural patina tells a story—of adventures taken, energies absorbed, and the passage of time. If you resonate with that earthy, vintage look, feel free to let your copper evolve organically.

Why add lacquer?

  • Slows the natural darkening (patina) of copper
  • Minimizes the chance of skin reactions
  • Keeps copper looking brighter for longer
  • Protects while preserving the earthy character of your jewelry
