Why Welo Opal

Ethiopian Welo opals are a variety of hydrophane opal found in the Welo region of Ethiopia, prized for their vivid play-of-color ranging from warm honey and amber base tones to flashes of orange, green, and blue. How This Handmade Opal Ring Is Made

Each ring is made to order in my small Santa Fe studio. I hand-select every opal for its color and fire, then electroform copper directly around the stone using a slow electrical process that takes days. The result is a completely one-of-a-kind setting with its own character. No mass production, no shortcuts.

Welo opals vary in base tone and play-of-color. The ring you receive will be similar in character to those shown, chosen for its beauty and quality.

A Note on Opal Care

Welo opals are hydrophane and can absorb water, which may temporarily affect their appearance. Remove before swimming, showering, or applying lotions or perfumes. Store dry and away from prolonged direct sunlight. Handle with care.

Copper Finish Options

Bright Copper has a warm lustrous shine and will develop a natural patina over time. Polish with a soft jewelry cloth to restore brightness. Antique Copper is dipped in liver of sulfur and polished to a rich dark patina that brightens gradually with wear.
