The Root Chakra
In the chakra system originating in ancient Indian tantric traditions, Muladhara is the first of seven energy centers. Its element is earth. Its color is red. It governs the legs, feet, bones, and large intestine — the parts of the body most directly connected to physical survival and movement through the world. Practices associated with the root chakra include walking barefoot, time in nature, physical exercise, and working with the hands. Wearing grounding stones is one of the oldest and most cross-cultural of these practices.
Black Tourmaline
A boron silicate mineral forming in long striated rods. One of the most widely used grounding and protective stones across traditions worldwide. Associated with energetic boundaries, physical grounding, and the deflection of stress and negative energy. Piezoelectric — it generates a small electrical charge under pressure. Durable for everyday wear.
Hematite
Iron oxide in its metallic form — heavy, silver-grey, and cold to the touch. One of the densest stones used in jewelry. The weight is immediately noticeable when worn. Associated with physical strength, focus, and the kind of grounding that comes from feeling the body's own weight. The same mineral that gives blood and red clay their color.
Red Jasper
An opaque microcrystalline quartz colored deep red by iron oxide. One of the oldest stones used by humans across every inhabited continent. Associated with physical endurance, vitality, and connection to the earth. The red color connects it directly to the root chakra's traditional color and energy.
Smoky Quartz
Quartz naturally irradiated over millions of years, turning from clear to warm brown or grey-black. Associated with grounding, calm, and the quiet release of accumulated stress. One of the most wearable of the darker stones — present enough to feel, subtle enough for everyday use.
Garnet
A silicate mineral occurring in deep red, burgundy, and sometimes nearly black. One of the oldest talisman stones, found in archaeological sites across Egypt, Rome, and ancient Persia. Associated with physical vitality, passion, and grounding. The deep red connects it to the root chakra's color and to the energy of the physical body.
Onyx and Bloodstone
Black onyx, a banded chalcedony, is associated with self-discipline, focus, and steady accumulation of strength. Bloodstone — dark green with red iron oxide spots — has been used as a talisman for physical courage and vitality since antiquity. Both are deeply grounding stones with long histories as protective amulets.
